RESUMO

Discovering new negative thermal expansion (NTE) materials is a great challenge in experiment. Meanwhile, the machine learning (ML) method can be another approach to explore NTE materials using the existing material databases. Herein, we adopt the multi-step ML method with efficient data augmentation and cross-validation to identify around 1000 materials, including oxides, fluorides, and cyanides, with bulk framework structures as new potential NTE candidate materials from ICSD and other databases. Their corresponding coefficients of negative thermal expansion (CNTE) and temperature ranges are also well predicted. Among them, about 57 materials are predicted to have an NTE probability of 100%. Some predicted NTE materials were tested by the first-principles calculations with quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA), which indicates that the ML results are in good agreement with the first principles calculation results. Based on the comprehensive analysis of the existing and predicted NTE materials, we established three universal relationships of CNTE with an average electronegativity, porosity, and temperature range. From these, we also identified some important critical values characterizing the NTE property, which can serve as an important criterion for designing new NTE materials.

The design of multimetal catalysts holds immense significance for efficient CO2 capture and its conversion into economically valuable chemicals. Herein, heterobimetallic catalysts (MiMo)L were exploited for the CO2 reduction reactions (CO2RR) using relativistic density functional theory (DFT). The octadentate Pacman-like polypyrrolic ligand (H4L) accommodates two metal ions (Mo, W, Nd, and U) inside (Mi) and outside (Mo) its month, rendering a weak bimetal coupling-assisted MN4 catalytically active site. Adsorption reactions have access to energetically stable coordination modes of -OCO, -OOC, and -(OCO)2, where the donor atom(s) are marked in bold. Among all of the species, (UiMoo)L releases the most energy. Along CO2RR, it favors to produce CO. The high-efficiency CO2 reduction is attributed to the size matching of U with the ligand mouth and the effective manipulation of the electron density of both ligand and bimetals. The mechanism in which heterobimetals synergetically capture and reduce CO2 has been postulated. This establishes a reference in elaborating on the complicated heterogeneous catalysis.

The lateral habenula (LHb) projects to the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and dorsal raphe nuclei (DRN) that deliver dopamine (DA) and serotonin (5-HT) to cortical and limbic regions such as the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), hippocampus and basolateral amygdala (BLA). Dysfunctions of VTA-related mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic and DRN-related serotonergic systems contribute to non-motor symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, how the LHb affects the VTA and DRN in PD remains unclear. Here, we used electrophysiological and neurochemical approaches to explore the effects of LHb lesions on the firing activity of VTA and DRN neurons, as well as the levels of DA and 5-HT in related brain regions in unilateral 6-hydroxydopamie (6-OHDA)-induced PD rats. We found that compared to sham lesions, lesions of the LHb increased the firing rate of DA neurons in the VTA and 5-HT neurons in the DRN, but decreased the firing rate of GABAergic neurons in the same nucleus. In addition, lesions of the LHb increased the levels of DA and 5-HT in the mPFC, ventral hippocampus and BLA compared to sham lesions. These findings suggest that lesions of the LHb enhance the activity of mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic and serotonergic systems in PD.

AIM: No data are currently available regarding the association between Lp(a) and the cardiovascular outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) according to their family history (FHx) of CAD. This study aimed to evaluate the significance of Lp(a) in predicting major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in patients with chronic coronary syndrome (CCS) with or without FHx. METHODS: A total of 6056 patients with CCS were enrolled. Information on FHx was collected, and the plasma Lp(a) levels were measured. All patients were followed up regularly. The independent and joint associations of Lp(a) and FHx with the risk of MACEs, including cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and stroke, were analyzed. RESULTS: With over an average of 50.35±18.58 months follow-up, 378 MACEs were recorded. A Cox regression analysis showed an elevated Lp(a) level to be an independent predictor for MACEs in patients with [hazard ratio (HR): 2.77, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.38-5.54] or without FHx (HR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.02-1.77). In comparison to subjects with non-elevated Lp(a) and negative FHx, patients with elevated Lp(a) alone were at a nominally higher risk of MACEs (HR: 1.26, 95% CI: 0.96-1.67), while those with both had the highest risk (HR: 1.93, 95% CI: 1.14-3.28). Moreover, adding Lp(a) to the original model increased the C-statistic by 0.048 in subjects with FHx (p=0.004) and by 0.004 in those without FHx (p=0.391). CONCLUSIONS: The present study is the first to suggest that Lp(a) could be used to predict MACEs in CCS patients with or without FHx; however, its prognostic significance was more noteworthy in patients with FHx.

The paper also presents future research directions, emphasizing the need for a deeper understanding of the complex mechanisms underlying balance changes with aging and the potential of emerging technologies and interdisciplinary approaches in enhancing assessment and intervention methods. The dendritic cell tetrameric lectin, DC-SIGN, and its closely related endothelial cell lectin, DC-SIGNR (collectively abbreviated as DC-SIGN/R) play a key role in the binding and transmission of deadly viruses, including Ebola, HIV, HCV, and SARS-CoV-2. Their virus binding/release processes involve a gradually acidifying environment following the natural intracellular trafficking pathways. Therefore, understanding DC-SIGN/R's pH-dependent binding properties with glycan ligands is of great importance. We have recently developed densely glycosylated gold nanoparticles (glycan-GNPs) as a powerful new tool for probing DC-SIGN/R multivalent lectin-glycan interaction (MLGI) mechanisms. They can provide not only quantitative MLGI affinities but also important structural information, such as binding site orientation and binding modes. Herein, we further employ the glycan-GNP probes to investigate the pH dependency of DC-SIGN/R MLGI properties. We find that DC-SIGN/R MLGIs exhibit distinct pH dependence over the normal physiological (7.4) to lysosomal (∼4.6) pH range. DC-SIGN binds glycan-GNPs strongly and stably from pH 7.4 to ∼5.8, but the binding is weakened significantly as pH decreases to ≤5.4 and may be fully dissociated at pH 4.6. This behaviour is fully consistent with DC-SIGN's role as an endocytic recycling receptor. In contrast, DC-SIGNR's affinity with glycan-GNPs is enhanced with the decreasing pH from 7.4 to 5.4, peaking at pH 5.4, and then reduced as pH is further lowered. Interestingly, both DC-SIGN/R binding with glycan-GNPs are found to be partially reversible in a pH-dependent manner.

Light-driven micro/nanorobots (LMNRs) are tiny, untethered machines with great potential in fields like precision medicine, nano manufacturing, and various other domains. However, their practicality hinges on developing light-manipulation strategies that combine versatile functionalities, flexible design options, and precise controllability. Our study introduces an innovative approach to construct micro/nanorobots (MNRs) by utilizing micro/nanomotors as fundamental building blocks. Inspired by silicon Metal-Insulator-Semiconductor solar cell principles, we design a new type of optomagnetic hybrid micromotors (OHMs). These OHMs have been skillfully optimized with integrated magnetic constituent, resulting in efficient light propulsion, precise magnetic navigation, and the potential for controlled assembly. One of the key features of the OHMs is their ability to exhibit diverse motion modes influenced by fracture surfaces and interactions with the environment, streamlining cargo conveyance along "micro expressway" - the predesigned microchannels. Further enhancing their versatility, a template-guided assembly strategy facilitates the assembly of these micromotors into functional microrobots, encompassing various configurations such as "V-shaped", "N-shaped", and 3D structured microrobots. The heightened capabilities of these microrobots, underscore the innovative potential inherent in hybrid micromotor design and assembly, which provides a foundational platform for the realization of multi-component microrobots. Our work moves a step toward forthcoming microrobotic entities boasting advanced functionalities.

The plant microbiota is believed to be an accessory genome that extends plant functions, forming holobionts together with the host plant. Plant disease resistance, therefore, is inextricably linked with plant microbiota, which play important roles in plant growth and health. To explore the relationship between plant microbiota and disease resistance, we investigated the tobacco microbiome of two varieties with contrasting disease-resistance levels to bacterial wilt and black shank diseases. Comparative microbiome analysis indicated that the resistant variety assembled a distinct microbiota with higher network complexity and diversity. While Pseudomonas and Ensifer, which contain biocontrol and beneficial members, were enriched in the rhizosphere of the resistant variety, Ralstonia, a genus including the known causative pathogen, was enriched in the susceptible variety. Metagenome sequencing revealed that biocontrol functions, such as hydrogen cyanide synthase, pyochelin biosynthesis, and arthrofactin-type cyclic lipopeptide synthetase, were more abundant in the resistant variety. Further analysis indicated that contigs encoding the corresponding genes were mostly assigned to Pseudomonas. Among all the metagenome-assembled genomes, positive selection was suggested in the genome assigned to Pseudomonas only in the rhizosphere of the resistant variety. The search of biosynthetic gene clusters in the Pseudomonas genome revealed a non-ribosomal peptide synthetase, the compound of which was brabantamide A, with known antimicrobial activity. Collectively, our study suggests that the plant microbiota might be involved in microbe-mediated disease resistance. Particularly, our results highlight Pseudomonas in the rhizosphere of the disease-resistant variety as a promising biocontrol candidate. Our study may facilitate further screening of bacterial isolates and the targeted design of microbial communities.

BACKGROUND: Hyperspectral techniques have aroused great interest in non-invasively measuring periodontal tissue hemodynamics. However, current studies mainly focused on three typical inflammation stages (healthy, gingivitis and periodontitis) and practical approaches for using optical spectroscopy for early and precisely detection of periodontal inflammation at finer disease stages have not been well studied. METHODS: This study provided novel spectroscopic insights into periodontitis at different stages of disease, and developed six simple but physically meaning hemodynamic spectral indices (HSIs) including four spectral absorption depths of oxyhemoglobin ( D HbO 2 ), deoxyhemoglobin ( D Hb ), total hemoglobin ( t Hb ) and tissue water ( D water ), and two normalized difference indices of oxyhemoglobin( N D HbO 2 I ) and deoxyhemoglobin ( N D Hb I ) from continuum-removal spectra (400-1700 nm) of periodontal tissue collected from 47 systemically healthy subjects over different severities from healthy, gingivitis, slight, moderate to severe periodontitis for early and precision diagnostics of periodontitis. Typical statistical analyses were conducted to explore the effectiveness of the proposed HSIs. RESULTS: D Hb and t Hb exerted significant increasing trends as inflammation progressed, whereas D HbO 2 exhibited significant difference (P < 0.05) from the healthy sites only at moderate and severe periodontitis and D water presented unstable sensitives to disease severity. By contrast, N D HbO 2 I and N D Hb I showed more steadily downward trends as severity increased, and demonstrated the highest correlations with clinical gold standard parameters. Particularly, the proposed normalized HSIs ( N D HbO 2 I and N D Hb I ) yielded high correlations of - 0.49 and - 0.44 with probing depth, respectively, far outperforming results achieved by previous studies. The performances of the HSIs were also confirmed using the periodontal therapy group. CONCLUSIONS: These results indicated great potentials of combination optical spectroscopy and smart devices to non-invasively probe periodontitis at earlier stages using the simple and practical HSIs. Trial registration This study was retrospectively registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry on October 24, 2021, and the clinical registration number is ChiCTR2100052306.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Breast cancer progression and treatment response are significantly influenced by the tumor microenvironment (TME). Traditional methods for assessing TME are invasive, posing a challenge for patient care. This study introduces a non-invasive approach to TME classification by integrating radiomics and machine learning, aiming to predict the TME status using imaging data, thereby aiding in prognostic outcome prediction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Utilizing multi-omics data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA), this study employed CIBERSORT and MCP-counter algorithms analyze immune infiltration in breast cancer. A radiomics classifier was developed using a random forest algorithm, leveraging quantitative features extracted from intratumoral and peritumoral regions of Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging (DCE-MRI) scans. The classifer's ability to predict diverse TME states were and their prognostic implications were evaluated using Kaplan-Meier survival curves. RESULTS: Three distinct TME states were identified using RNA-Seq data, each displaying unique prognostic and biological characteristics. Notably, patients with increased immune cell infiltration showed significantly improved prognoses (P < 0.05). The classifier, comprising 24 radiomic features, demonstrated high predictive accuracy (AUC of training set = 0.960, 95 % CI: 0.922, 0.997; AUC of testing set = 0.853, 95 % CI: 0.687, 1.000) in differentiating these TME states. Predictions from the classifier also correlated significantly with overall patient survival (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study offers a detailed analysis of the complex TME states in breast cancer and presents a reliable, noninvasive radiomics classifier for TME assessment. The classifer's accurate prediction of TME status and its correlation with prognosis highlight its potential as a tool in personalized breast cancer treatment, paving the way for more individualized and less invasive therapeutic strategies.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of diseases that primarily affect the heart or blood vessels, with high disability and mortality rates, posing a serious threat to human health. The causative factors, pathogenesis, and characteristics of common CVD differ, but they all involve common pathological processes such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and fibrosis. S100A9 belongs to the S100 family of calcium-binding proteins, which are mainly secreted by myeloid cells and bind to the Toll-like receptor 4 and receptor for advanced glycation end products and is involved in regulating pathological processes such as inflammatory response, fibrosis, vascular calcification, and endothelial barrier function in CVD. The latest research has found that S100A9 is a key biomarker for diagnosing and predicting various CVD. Therefore, this article reviews the latest research progress on the diagnostic and predictive, and therapeutic value of S100A9 in inflammatory-related CVD such as atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, and arterial aneurysm and summarizes its molecular mechanisms in the progression of CVD, aiming to explore new predictive methods and to identify potential intervention targets for CVD in clinical practice.

This study aimed to investigate the association between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and Parkinson's disease (PD) utilizing prospective cohort study and Mendelian randomization. The dataset contained a substantial cohort of 426,911 participants from the UK Biobank, discussing the association between IBS and PD with Cox proportional hazards models and case-control analysis while adjusting for covariates such as age, gender, ethnicity and education level. In univariate Cox regression model, the risk of PD was reduced in IBS patients (HR: 0.774, 95%CI: 0.625-0.956, P = 0.017), but the statistical significance diminished in the three models after adjusting for other variables. In a few subgroup analyses, IBS patients are less likely to develop into PD, and patients diagnosed with IBS after 2000 also had a lower risk (HR: 0.633, 95%CI: 0.403-0.994, P = 0.047) of subsequently developing PD. In addition, we matched five healthy control participants based on gender and age at the end of the study for each IBS patient diagnosed during the follow-up period, and logistic regression results (OR:1.239, 95%CI: 0.896-1.680, P = 0.181) showed that IBS was not associated with the risk of PD. Mendelian randomization did not find significant evidence of the causal relationship between IBS and Parkinson's disease (OR: 0.801, 95%CI: 0.570-1.278, P = 0.204). Overall, we suggest that IBS status is not associated with the risk of developing PD, and that these findings provide valuable insights into the clinical management and resource allocation of patients with IBS.

Esophagogastric variceal bleeding (EVB) is one of the common digestive system emergencies with poor prognosis and high rate of rebleeding after treatment. To explore the effects of endoscopic therapy and drug therapy on the prognosis and rebleeding of patients with EVB, and then select better treatment methods to effectively improve the prognosis. From January 2013 to December 2022, 965 patients with EVB who were hospitalized in gastroenterology Department of the 940 Hospital of Joint Logistic Support Forces of PLA were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were divided into endoscopic treatment group (ET, n = 586) and drug treatment group (DT, n = 379). Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was performed in both groups, and the general information, efficacy and length of hospital stay were recorded. The patients were followed up for 3 months after bleeding control to determine whether rebleeding occurred. There were 286 cases in each group after PSM. Compared with DT group, ET had higher treatment success rate (P < 0.001), lower rebleeding rate (P < 0.001), lower mortality rate within 3 months, and no significant difference in total hospital stay (P > 0.05). Compared with drug therapy, endoscopic treatment of EVB has short-term efficacy advantages, and can effectively reduce the incidence of rebleeding and mortality within 3 months.

The clinical benefits of statins have well-established and recognized worldwide. Although statins are well-tolerated generally, however, the report of statin-related adverse event and statin intolerance are common in China, which results in insufficient use of statins and poor adherence. The main reason may be attributed to confusions or misconceptions in the clinical diagnosis and management in China, including the lack of unified definitions and diagnostic standards, broad grasp of diagnosis, and unscientific management strategies. Based on that, this consensus carefully summarized the statin-related gene polymorphism and statin usage issue among Chinese population, and comprehensively reviewed global research data on statin intolerance, referenced guidelines, and consensus literature on statin intolerance in foreign and different regions, proposes an appropriate and easy to implement statin intolerance definition as well as corresponding diagnostic criteria and management strategies for Chinese clinicians, in order to improve the clinical application of statin drugs and enhance the prevention and treatment level of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in China.

BACKGROUND: Unicompartmental knee arthroplasty is an effective treatment for knee osteoarthritis, but it has the risk of failure, and the installation position of the prosthesis is one of the factors affecting the failure. There are few biomechanical studies on the installation angle of unicompartmental knee prosthesis. METHODS: Constructed a finite element model of a normal human knee joint, and the validity of the model was verified by stress and front anterior methods. The mobile-bearing unicompartmental knee arthroplasty femoral prosthesis was placed at 3° intervals from 0° sagittal plane to 15° flexion, and - 2° and 17°were established, and observing the biomechanical changes of components. FINDINGS: Maximum peak stresses occurred at a sagittal mounting angle of -2° for the insert and the contralateral meniscus, with the tibia showing a maximum at 17° sagittal and the tibial prosthesis stress maximum occurring at 6° sagittal. As the sagittal plane angle of the femoral prosthesis increases and the osteotomy distance extends posteriorly, more bone is amputated during the osteotomy. The ratio of the distance from the tip of the anterior intramedullary nail to the anterior end of the osteotomy to the total anteroposterior length of the sagittal osteotomy ranged from 43.2% to 44.6%. INTERPRETATION: In this paper, the more appropriate sagittal mounting position for the femoral prosthesis is between 9 and 12°, based on the amount of osteotomy and the peak stress of each component in a standing position.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a potential risk factor for adverse outcomes in haematopoietic cell transplantation (HSCT) recipients. We aimed to explore longitudinal body changes in muscle and adipose mass and their prognostic value in allogeneic HSCT-treated severe aplastic anaemia (SAA) patients. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed consecutive SAA patients who underwent allogeneic HSCT between January 2017 and March 2022. Measurements of pectoral muscle and corresponding subcutaneous fat mass were obtained via chest computed tomography at baseline and at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months following HSCT. Sarcopenia was defined as pectoral muscle index (PMI) lower than the sex-specific median at baseline. Changes in body composition over time were evaluated by generalized estimating equations. Cox regression models were used to investigate prognostic factors affecting overall survival (OS) and failure-free survival (FFS). A nomogram was constructed from the Cox regression model for OS. RESULTS: We included 298 adult SAA patients (including 129 females and 169 males) with a median age of 31 years [interquartile range (IQR), 24-39 years] at baseline. Sarcopenia was present in 148 (148/298, 50%) patients at baseline, 218 (218/285, 76%) patients post-1 month, 209 (209/262, 80%) patients post-3 month, 169 (169/218, 78%) patients post-6 month, and 129 (129/181, 71%) patients post-12 month. A significant decrease in pectoral muscle mass was observed in SAA patients from the time of transplant to 1 year after HSCT, and the greatest reduction occurred in post 1-3 months (P < 0.001). The sarcopenia group exhibited significantly lower 5-year OS (90.6% vs. 100%, log-rank P = 0.039) and 5-year FFS (89.2% vs. 100%, log-rank P = 0.021) than the nonsarcopenia group at baseline. Sarcopenia at baseline (hazard ratio, HR, 6.344; 95% confidence interval, CI: 1.570-25.538; P = 0.01; and HR, 3.275; 95% CI: 1.159-9.252; P = 0.025, respectively) and the delta value of the PMI at 6 months post-transplantation (ΔPMI6) (HR, 0.531; 95% CI: 0.374-0.756; P < 0.001; and HR, 0.666; 95% CI: 0.505-0.879; P = 0.004, respectively) were demonstrated to be independent prognostic factors for OS and FFS in SAA patients undergoing HSCT, and were used to construct the nomogram. The C-index of the nomogram was 0.75, and the calibration plot showed good agreement between the predictions made by the nomogram and actual observations. CONCLUSIONS: Sarcopenia persists in SAA patients from the time of transplant to the 1-year follow-up after HSCT. Both sarcopenia at baseline and at 6 months following HSCT are associated with poor clinical outcomes, especially in patients with persistent muscle mass loss up to 6 months after transplantation.

Mass spectrometry (MS)-based proteomics workflows typically involve complex, multi-step processes, presenting challenges with sample losses, reproducibility, requiring substantial time and financial investments, and specialized skills. Here we introduce One-Tip, a proteomics methodology that seamlessly integrates efficient, one-pot sample preparation with precise, narrow-window data-independent acquisition (nDIA) analysis. One-Tip substantially simplifies sample processing, enabling the reproducible identification of >9000 proteins from ~1000 HeLa cells. The versatility of One-Tip is highlighted by nDIA identification of ~6000 proteins in single cells from early mouse embryos. Additionally, the study incorporates the Uno Single Cell Dispenser™, demonstrating the capability of One-Tip in single-cell proteomics with >3000 proteins identified per HeLa cell. We also extend One-Tip workflow to analysis of extracellular vesicles (EVs) extracted from blood plasma, demonstrating its high sensitivity by identifying >3000 proteins from 16 ng EV preparation. One-Tip expands capabilities of proteomics, offering greater depth and throughput across a range of sample types.

Existing optical information hiding algorithms for multiple images require generating hidden keys for embedded images, resulting in the transmission of numerous keys. This challenge undermines the usage of these algorithms in low-quality networks. To address this issue and enhance transmission efficiency, we present a multi-image optical information hiding algorithm based on Fourier transformation principles, which is employed to generate hidden frequency maps and carrier frequency maps. Specific low-frequency information zones are extracted within these hidden frequency maps. A chaotic system integrates a phase mask, modulated with the low-frequency regions, positioned in the carrier frequency map's high-frequency sector. The final stego image is obtained by subjecting the carrier frequency map to inverse Fourier transformation. Experimental analysis shows that concealing three images takes only 0.0089 s, with extraction requiring 0.0658 s. Post-extraction PSNR values for hidden images exceed 32 dB. Robustness and anti-attack experiments were done to prove the security of this algorithm. The compared experiments between the proposed method and other state-of-the-art algorithms affirm the algorithm's attributes of simplicity, ease of implementation, robust security, and high efficiency. Importantly, the restoration process eliminates the necessity of transmitting hidden keys, reducing network burdens and enhancing both concealment and extraction efficiencies significantly.

Cholesterol plays an essential role in regulating the functionality of biomembranes. This study employed in situ second-harmonic generation (SHG) to investigate the adsorption behavior of the dye molecule 4-(4-(diethylamino)styryl)-N-methyl-pyridinium iodide (D289) on a biomimic membrane composed of 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-(1'-rac-glycerol) (sodium salt) (DPPG) and cholesterol. The time-dependent polarization SHG intensity exhibited an initial rapid increase, followed by a subsequent decline. The initial increased SHG intensity is responsible for the electrostatic interaction-driven adsorption of D289 onto the membrane, while the decrease in the SHG signal results from the broadening of the orientation distribution within the membrane. Heterodyne-detected SHG (HD-SHG) measurements demonstrated that the adsorption of dye molecules influenced the phase of the induced electric field. The interfacial potential Φ(0) as a function of time was measured, and we found that even after reaching a stable Stern layer state, the diffusion layer continued to exhibit a dynamic change. This study offers a comprehensive understanding of the influence of cholesterol on adsorption, reorientation dynamics, and dynamic changes in the reorientation of water in the diffusion layer.
